Law firm marketing online: the journey your client actually takes

Almost nobody instructs a law firm off a single search. They search, read a little, put it down, come back that evening, look you up by name, read what other people said about you, compare you against two others, and only then make contact — often by telephone, and often days after the search your analytics recorded.

Marketing built around that journey performs very differently from marketing built around the first click. Most firms optimise the click and lose the client somewhere in the four days afterwards, without ever seeing it happen.

What actually happens between the problem and the phone call

The journey has a shape, and it is longer and less tidy than the funnel diagrams suggest. Understanding it changes what you build and, more importantly, what you stop bothering with.

It begins with a symptom, not a service. People search for what has gone wrong in their own words, rarely for the legal term you would use for it.

The first read is a scan for relevance and reassurance, not a decision. Nothing you write at this stage gets read carefully.

Then a gap — hours or days — in which the person does nothing visible at all, and during which your competitors are being looked at too.

Then a named search. They look up your firm specifically, and what they find is reviews, your profile and whatever else carries your name.

Then a comparison against two or three others, made on impressions rather than analysis, and finally contact — usually by phone, and usually to whichever firm made it easiest.

The click you paid for and the instruction you received are frequently separated by several days and at least one device.

This is why attribution in legal marketing is so persistently misleading. The last thing somebody clicks gets the credit, and the page that actually convinced them is invisible in the report.

It is also why judging a campaign on its first fortnight tends to produce the wrong conclusion twice over: too early to see the instructions, and too soon to know which pages did the work.

The four points where firms lose people

Each of these losses happens invisibly. Nobody fills in a form to tell you they went elsewhere, which is why these faults survive for years in firms that believe their marketing simply is not working.

At the scan. The page opens with the firm's history rather than the reader's problem, so the relevance question goes unanswered and they leave in seconds.

In the gap. The firm has nothing to be found by when the person searches its name that evening — thin reviews, an empty profile, no third-party mention of any kind.

At the comparison. Three firms look broadly equivalent, so the decision falls to whichever seems easiest to contact and most obviously staffed by real people.

At contact. The enquiry arrives and is answered slowly, or by voicemail, or with a request to fill in a further form — and the person simply calls the next firm on their list.

The fourth is the most expensive and the cheapest to fix, and it is almost never a marketing budget problem.

Building for the journey rather than the click

The work below is ordered by what it costs against what it recovers. Most of it is unglamorous, and none of it requires a larger advertising budget.

Write the opening of every page to the symptom in the reader's own words, and put the reassurance in the first screen rather than the third.

Assume the named search will happen and prepare for it: a current profile, a steady flow of reviews, and named people with real photographs.

Make yourself obviously contactable in more than one way. A phone number that dials on a tap, a named person, and a form that asks for three things rather than fourteen.

Answer quickly, and measure how quickly. Speed of first response is the highest-return metric in legal marketing and almost nobody tracks it.

Record the source of every enquiry including the telephone ones, and accept that the record will be imperfect.

Judge campaigns over a quarter, not a fortnight, and against instructed matters rather than clicks.

Give people something to read in the gap — a clear guide to what happens next — so that the days between the first visit and the decision are spent with you rather than elsewhere.

Then check the whole journey yourself on a phone, as a stranger would, starting from a search rather than from your own home page.

That last exercise is the cheapest research available to any firm, and it is the one almost nobody does. Most of the faults above are obvious within ten minutes of attempting your own journey on a mobile.

FAQs

How long does it take someone to choose a law firm online?

Usually days rather than minutes, across more than one device and more than one session. They search, read, leave, look you up by name, compare two or three firms and then make contact — which is why campaigns judged over a fortnight tend to be judged wrongly.

Why do enquiries not match the traffic we see?

Because the click that gets recorded and the moment somebody decides are usually days apart, and the final contact is often a phone call your analytics never sees. The page that did the convincing rarely appears in the report at all.

What is the single highest-return fix?

Speed of first response. A large share of what firms treat as a marketing problem is actually enquiries going cold between arriving and being answered, and it costs nothing to fix beyond deciding to.

Do reviews matter for online marketing for a law firm?

More than most firms expect, because of the named search. After reading your site, people look your firm up by name that evening — and thin or stale reviews at that moment undo the work every other channel paid for.

How should we test our own online marketing?

Start from a search on a mobile phone, as a stranger with a problem would, and go all the way through to making contact. Ten minutes of that surfaces more real faults than a quarter of reporting.

End Note

Online marketing for a law firm is usually judged at the click, because the click is the part that is easy to count. The decision happens somewhere else entirely — in a gap of a day or two, on a phone, against two other firms, and often on nothing more than who looked easiest to talk to.

Build for that stretch instead. Answer the symptom plainly, be findable by name, be easy to contact, and answer fast. The channels barely change; what changes is where the effort goes.
